Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS submitted the technology SkinLesions to the contest Born from Knowlegde, promoted by ANI, and was chosen as one of the finalists. The selected business ideas receive, as reward, the participation in the Immersion Programme, which happened in Lisbon (3rd and 4th of October), after occurring in Porto (26th and 27th of September).
An estimated number of 180.000 doctor’s appointments didn’t take place in 2014, in the Portuguese National Health System, caused by lack of dermatologists. With the ageing of the population, it becomes clear that creating low-cost alternatives for dermatologic healthcare is of crucial importance.
The Skinlesions project is the result of the SmartSkins and Service Assisted Living (SAL) research. This mobile-based solution aims to improve the referral process of skin lesions between Local Health Centres and Hospital Dermatology Departments and will later enable optimizing the triage process for patients examined in Local Health Centres through an accessible alternative to support early detection of melanoma.
In order to support the technology transfer of this solution, Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS submitted the technology SkinLesions to the Born from Knowledge (BfK IDEAS) contest, which is a solid opportunity to explore the idea in a business driven context.
The BfK IDEAS awards the best business ideas that came from R&D activities or scientific and technological knowledge. In the Immersion Programme, ANI joined Beta-i, in order to support the participants in improving the business ideas and pitch techniques. The final pitch will take place in TechDays, in Aveiro, on the 12th of October (Thursday).
