The WGW4IoT project, developed by Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS for the Portuguese company TekOn Electronics (Bresimar Automação, S.A.), is coming to an end, achieving outstanding results. New additional developments are under way and the first steps to turn this prototype into a commercial product are already being taken.
The main output of the partnership is a fully-featured gateway with Internet of Things (IoT) cutting edge technology targeted for industrial environments. This gateway provides an extensive set of features and flexibility, allowing future developments and product scaling, due to its completely modular design, both on the hardware and software levels.
The WGW4IoT gateway currently supports TekOn proprietary communication module and temperature sensors for production lines, but can be easily configured to support any module based on UART (universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter), I2C (inter-integrated circuit) or SPI (serial peripheral interface). It features a powerful embedded firmware supporting Modbus protocol on RS-485 and Ethernet interfaces, local database for measurements and other data, integration with IoT cloud services (IBM Bluemix currently supported), advanced RESTful API (application programming interface) and comprehensive web portal based on Node.JS, data export in several formats and support for remote monitoring and upgrades.
This is one of the several projects developed by FhP-AICOS, in partnership with companies, institutions or other researcher centres. Through this cooperation in particular, FhP-AICOS has, once again, the opportunity to effectively demonstrate the centre’s capacity to develop R&D knowledge and advanced technologies, capable of generating added value to its partners or clients.
