Developed by Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS (FhP-AICOS) together with Serviços Partilhados do Ministério da Saúde (SPMS) and the entities IPO Coimbra, CHUP and ULS Guarda, the Derm.AI project was the big winner of the 5th edition of the HINTT Awards in the category of Clinical Outcomes.
Working to develop research of practical utility, FhP-AICOS’ Derm.AI project aims to help in the early diagnosis of skin cancer, a disease that represents almost a third of all the identified cancer cases. Through the development of a mobile app that will support both general practitioners in acquiring images of the skin lesion in an intuitive and fast way, and the dermatology expert in the triage process and case diagnosis through a decision support platform, the Derm.AI project will improve the pre-existing teledermatology system – making it more efficient – resorting to Artificial Intelligence technology for risk priorization.
HINTT – Health Intelligent Talks & Trends is an annual event dedicated to the topic of health that aims to broaden the talk around the future of health, focusing on citizens and technology. Every year, HINTT recognizes the projects with the best practices of adopting Information and Communication technologies, having in mind a better healthcare. The Derm.AI project was awarded due to its technological potential of fighting late diagnosis of skin cancer as well as giving an answer to the lack of dermatology experts in the Portuguese National Health System.
