Description:
Ageing is one of the greatest social and economic challenges of the 21st century for European societies. The European Union estimates that by 2025 more than 20% of Europeans will be 65 or over. When growing old, the physical ability of elderly people gradually wanes, making them prone to accidents that can result in injury, hospitalization, or even loss of self-care ability. Considering these challenges is important to ensure that older adults can extend the time they can live in their preferred environment by increasing their autonomy, self-confidence and mobility. In order to prevent household accidents, is important that houses are equipped with several sensors that can provide information and warnings on the well-being of older adults.
This project aims to develop a solution for a warning system that can, detect malfunctions in house environment, for instances, non-supervised electrical consumers, water leaks and gas/smoke leaks. The objective is to design a Smart Bluetooth (formerly known as Bluetooth Low Energy) based hardware and software solutions that can monitor the aforementioned malfunctions and alert formal or informal caregivers. The developed solution should envisage Android smartphones, or other Android based platforms, as the interface and gateway to the system.
